During research, Chloe found some information about Mattias Montero; a director of photography. Montero has made many short films and commercials like the Cadbury’s dairy milk advert which has received over six million hits due to its ‘never been done before appeal’. Chloe and I found this interesting as our music video has a similar appeal to it also.
Coincidentally, a piece directed by Montero includes the music video ‘What’s a girl to do?’ by Bat for Lashes’.
At a first glance, this music video could be called simple, though when studied in depth, it clearly is not.
This is the video and as you can see, the precise positioning of the camera allows the subjects within the video -aside from the female- to appear to be hidden.
Furthermore, the setting and lighting is what give the music video such a haunting feel. Chloe and I also appreciate the idea that this music video is unique and goes against the conventions of most music videos. Strangely the video does not demonstrate ambi-editing yet it is still successful. This is because it has been filmed without any cuts; a very sophisticated and difficult thing to achieve when shooting anything.
This is Lykke Li's video Little Bit which was also directed by Montero.
The precision of the ambi-editing and cutting is exceptional and causes the viewer to be unable to look away from the footage.
Again, the video is extremely alternative; there is random dancing which creates a manic feel to the video yet it still appears to be so intricate.
Overall, Chloe and I feel that Montero is such an inspirational character and his input into the industry relates to a niche market- thus explaining our interest in his productions!
